Knit your own hat - A beginners hat pattern

Posted by

A very simple beginners hat pattern. Knitted flat and then seamed. With a pom-pom of course, because who doesn't love a pom-pom!?

You will need: 1 x 100g (80m) ball of Debbie Bliss Roma or other super chunky yarn

1 x pair of 10mm needles

A darning needle

Cast on 42 stitches

Rows 1-6: Knit

Row 7: Knit

Row 8: Purl

Repeat rows 7 and 8 another 11 times (24 rows stocking stitch) or until hat measures 19cm.

Row 31: *K2, K2tog* repeat to last 2 stitches, K2

Row 32: Purl

Row 33: *K1, K2tog* repeat to last 2 stitches, K2

Row 34: Purl

Row 35: *K2tog* repeat to end.

Cut yarn leaving a long tail. Using a darning needle thread the yarn through the remaining stitches and pull closed tightly. Seam side using the remaining yarn. 'Mattress stitch' looks best.

Voila! You have a hat. You can make a Pom-Pom using the remaining yarn or leave it plain!
